A Simple Funk Drum Practice Routine (Pocket First)

The most common mistake in funk practice is treating it like any other groove: read the pattern, play it at tempo, move on. Funk doesn't really work that way, because the thing that makes it funk — the pocket — isn't in the notes themselves, it's in the tiny timing relationships between them. Building those relationships one layer at a time gets you a real pocket a lot faster than playing the whole pattern at speed and hoping it settles.

Step 1: hi-hat pattern alone

Play just the hi-hat part on its own, slowly, until the subdivision feels completely even — no rushing the upbeats, no dragging into the downbeats. This is the skeleton everything else hangs off of, so it's worth getting boring-level solid before adding anything.

Step 2: add the ghost notes

Bring in the snare, including the ghost notes — the quiet, buried hits between the backbeats. Keep the hi-hat steady while you layer these in; if the hi-hat wobbles the moment the snare gets involved, that's a sign to go back to step one at a slower tempo.

Step 3: add the kick

Add the kick drum pattern last. By this point the hi-hat and snare relationship should be solid enough that the kick is just filling in underneath it, not something that knocks the other two out of alignment.

Step 4: play it slow before you play it fast

Once all three limbs are together, resist the urge to jump to tempo. Play the full groove slowly — genuinely slower than feels necessary — until it sits in the pocket consistently. Speed is the last thing you add, not the first, and Drum Lab's Practice Mode can ramp it up gradually once the groove itself is solid.
